Audi A2 e-tron (2027): The A2 Returns as an Electric Efficiency Pioneer
A Familiar Name for a New Electric Era
Audi is bringing back the A2 nameplate as a fully electric compact hatchback, reviving a model that became known for its unusual proportions, lightweight construction and efficiency-focused engineering when it first appeared more than two decades ago. The new A2 e-tron retains that philosophy but translates it into Audi's latest electric era, becoming the brand's new entry point into premium EV ownership. Developed in Germany and produced at Audi's Ingolstadt headquarters, the A2 e-tron combines compact dimensions with a long wheelbase, spacious interior and a strong emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency. Audi says production preparations are well underway, with European deliveries beginning from late 2026 and early 2027 depending on market.
Up to 326 PS and 545 Nm
Underneath its compact body, the A2 e-tron uses a rear-wheel-drive architecture with permanently excited synchronous electric motors. Audi offers four power levels, beginning with 170 PS and 350 Nm and extending through 190 PS and 231 PS versions to a range-topping 326 PS and 545 Nm variant. The most powerful model accelerates from 0–100 km/h in approximately 5.7 seconds and reaches a limited top speed of 200 km/h, giving the compact Audi considerably more performance than its efficiency-oriented appearance might suggest. Three battery capacities are available — 52, 61 and 84 kWh gross — allowing the A2 e-tron to cover everything from urban commuting to longer-distance driving.
Efficiency Is the A2's Main Mission
Rather than pursuing outright battery size or power as its primary objective, Audi has engineered the A2 e-tron around efficiency. Its carefully shaped body achieves a 0.24 drag coefficient, the best aerodynamic figure in Audi's compact range, while details such as an enclosed underbody, controllable cooling-air intake, wheel-arch gap reducers and aerodynamic wheels help reduce energy consumption. The 140 kW version with Audi's optional efficiency package can achieve as little as 12.8 kWh/100 km under WLTP testing, which Audi describes as the lowest consumption figure ever achieved by one of its series-production models. Depending on configuration, the A2 e-tron can deliver up to approximately 646 km of WLTP range.
Compact Outside, Spacious Inside
The A2 e-tron's proportions are heavily influenced by its focus on practicality. A 2.77-metre wheelbase, short overhangs and distinctive roofline are designed to maximise cabin space without turning the car into a large vehicle. Audi has also fitted a 1.6-square-metre panoramic glass roof, while the cabin introduces a considerably more digital interpretation of the compact Audi interior. Standard equipment includes an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus and a curved 12.8-inch MMI touch display, alongside Audi's AI-powered assistant and e-tron route planner. The model also introduces Audi's first standard application of the Fidlock magnetic fastening system in a production vehicle, adding a flexible mounting solution within the cabin.
Charging and Bidirectional Energy
The different battery options also bring different charging capabilities. The 52 kWh battery supports DC charging at up to 100 kW, while the 61 kWh battery accepts up to 105 kW. The larger 84 kWh battery increases the maximum DC charging rate to 183 kW, with a 10–80 percent charging time of around 29 minutes. Beyond conventional charging, the A2 e-tron introduces bidirectional capability, allowing the vehicle to supply electricity to external equipment through Vehicle-to-Load functionality. In selected European markets, compatible hardware can also enable Vehicle-to-Home operation, turning the car's high-voltage battery into a temporary household energy-storage source.
Audi's New Compact EV Strategy
The return of the A2 also marks a broader change in Audi's compact-car strategy. With production of the A1 winding down and the Q2 leaving the Ingolstadt production line, the A2 e-tron is positioned as an important new entry point for Audi's electric range. Its combination of compact footprint, rear-wheel drive, strong efficiency and multiple powertrain configurations gives Audi a model designed specifically around European urban and everyday driving requirements. German pricing starts at €38,200 for the 125 kW version with the 52 kWh battery, while UK pricing starts at £32,200; specifications and pricing will vary by market.
Final Thoughts
The 2027 Audi A2 e-tron represents a significant reinterpretation of one of Audi's most unconventional nameplates. Instead of returning as a conventional small hatchback, the A2 has been transformed into an electric model where aerodynamic efficiency, intelligent packaging and everyday usability take centre stage. With up to 326 PS, rear-wheel drive, as much as 646 km of WLTP range and an exceptionally low 12.8 kWh/100 km consumption figure in its most efficient configuration, the new A2 demonstrates that compact EV development can focus on using energy intelligently rather than simply installing a larger battery. Produced in Ingolstadt and arriving in European markets from late 2026 into 2027, the A2 e-tron effectively brings the original model's efficiency philosophy into the modern electric age.
